The Castle

History

Once upon a time, there was Château de Pommard ... Its history is so rich that this is how one would like to start it, so as to convey how magical and fascinating it is.

Let us go back in time up to the beginnings of Château de Pommard, when the domain was instituted by Duke Eudes I of Bourgogne, making Pommard the centre of predilection of the vineyards of the Côte de Beaune.

In 1726, Messire Vivant de Micault, equerry and secretary of King Louis XVI, built a château and all the winegrowing outbuildings that can still be seen today.

In 1763, Sieur Claude Marey bought the estate. Anticipating the coming convulsions of the 1789, his son Nicolas Joseph sold Château Micault to an officer but kept the vines, the winery and the cellars. The estate was spared during the French Revolution.

In 1795, Nicolas Joseph Marey married Emilie Monge, daughter of the physicist Gaspard Monge, founder of the Ecole Polytechnique and Count of Peluse. The family became known as Marey Monge. Because he could not buy back Château Micault, Nicolas Joseph Marey built the Château Marey Monge on the road to Autun. With acquisitions and exchange, the property became the largest in the area.

Napoleon, a great lover of the wines of the estate and close friend of the family, had his room here and visited often. The château holds memories of the sumptuous functions that were held at the time.

In 1855,
the wine obtained supreme recognition when Jules Lavalle, the first to list Bourgogne wines, classified the Clos du Château de Pommard among the "Premières Cuvées", which are equivalent to today's "Premiers Crus".

In 1936, the property was acquired by the Laplanche family, who descended from a long line of winegrowers. By buying out Château Micault and its outhouses in 1966, the famous psychoanalyst Jean-Louis Laplanche and his wife Nadine made the Château de Pommard whole again.

2003, Maurice Giraud, lover of vines and the terroir, acquired this fabulous estate. With the help of over a hundred journeymen, he has livened up this lord of Bourgogne and its great cuvees to perpetuating, now more than ever,
the culture of excellence.
