What will I learn?

The WSET 3 courses are divided into two modules.

Unit 1

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling

  • How these factors influence the key characteristics of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world

  • How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality

Unit 2

  • How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

For more information, please download the WSET Specifications, as well as our program.

The Course Organisation

The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines includes 32.5 hours of training in the classroom delivered by one of our WSET-certified educators and 60 hours of self-study time with the WSET textbook and study guide. The program takes place over the course of two consecutive weeks, with 2 to 3 days of training per week.

Classes take place from 9 am to 5 pm including lunch breaks, study time and the exam. During each session with your WSET-certified educator, the class will use presentations, discussions and tastings to tackle the key points presented in the teaching material. You will taste 65 wines from in the main wine-producing regions of France, Europe and the New World.

Sessions are limited to 14 students.

The teaching resources

Once your registration for a session is validated, you'll receive your course material, containing a textbook, study guide, self-assessment exercises, and summary sheet of the Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine®. The program includes presentations, discussions and visual aids, as well as guided tastings and self-assessment exercises. The educator will answer your questions and encourage dynamic and interactive exchanges.

Evaluation And Certification

The exam takes place on the last afternoon of the course. Unit 1 includes 50 multiple choice questions and four short-answer questions. Unit 2 consists of a blind tasting of two wines where you need to describe the wines and analyse their quality. To pass, you must validate 55% of the questions in each unit. Your result will be emailed to you about 8 weeks after the course. Your certificate and pin will then be mailed to you. You can retake one or both units for a fee of 100 euros each.

This course is intended for anyone over 18 years old, but we recommend that you hold the WSET Level 2 in Wines or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge or experience in wine. For more information, please download the WSET Level 3 in Wines Specifications.
