What will I learn?

The WSET 3 courses are divided into two modules.

Unit 1

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling

  • How these factors influence the key characteristics of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world

  • How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality

Unit 2

  • How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

For more information, please download the WSET Specifications, as well as our program.

How do WSET Level 3 classes work?

The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines includes 32.5 hours of training in the classroom delivered by one of our WSET-certified educators and 60 hours of self-study time with the WSET textbook and study guide.

The course takes place over 10 evenings with 1 to 2 classes per week, from 7 pm to 10 pm. The final exam takes place on the Saturday morning following the last class. During your class hours, you will tackle the key points presented in the study material previously received and studied with your WSET-certified educator. You will taste 75 wines from the world's main wine-producing regions of France, Europe and the New World.

Sessions are limited to 14 students.

The teaching tools and methods

Once your registration for a session is validated, you'll receive your course material, containing a textbook, study guide, self-assessment exercises, and summary sheet of the Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine®. During your course, you will be led by a WSET-certified educator using interactive and engaging teaching methods. The program includes presentations, discussions and visual aids, as well as guided tastings and self-assessment exercises.

Evaluation And Certification

The exam takes place on the Saturday morning following the last course. Unit 1 consists of 50 multiple choice questions and 4 short-answer questions. Unit 2 consists of a blind tasting of two wines where you need to describe the wines and analyse their quality. To graduate, you must answer 55% of the questions correctly in each unit. Your result will be emailed to you about 8 weeks after the course. Your certificate and pin will then be mailed to you. You can retake one or both units for a fee of 100 euros each. Our students have a pass rate of 64% for the theory unit and 79% for the tasting unit for Level 3.

What are the requirements to enter the course?

This course is intended for anyone over 18 years old, but we recommend that you hold the WSET Level 2 in Wines or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge or experience in wine. For more information, please download the WSET Level 3 in Wines Specifications. Sessions are offered exclusively in Paris, both in French and in English. Registrations close 17 days prior to the start date of the session or when maximum capacity is reached.

How to prepare for your WSET Level 3 Award in Wines?

A minimum of 60 hours of preparation with the study pack is required. Students should read the textbook carefully, at least twice. We also strongly recommend you take notes on grape varietals, wine regions and wine countries. Use and annotate the map if you are a visual learner. However, no other materials are required for success: everything you need to know is in the WSET Level 3 textbook. Please keep in mind the delivery time of your teaching material (sent within 3 business days after registration) and the required study time when registering for a session.
